St. Anthony Dunes, Idaho

Fremont County

Located in northeastern Idaho, the Dunes of St Anthony offer fun times for all sorts of activities. As you can imagine, the area offers some incredible sand dunes for all levels of outdoor enthusiasts. With some dunes as high as 400 feet, the 10,600 acres offers plenty of excitement for all ages and all types of vehicles. Being a Wilderness Study Area, the dunes are pretty much closed during the winter months. The area is home to one of the largest elk herds in the United States. That being said, the dunes are just waiting for visitors to ride, hike, or drive and explore the area.  When I was there, I saw ATV's, motorcycles, horses as well as some high horsepowered sand rails and trucks. The area is beautiful and offers camping at Egin Lakes. Fees begin at $25 and go up from there depending on the size and amenities. According to the BLM Site, day fees are $5 per vehicle per day. Flags are required on all vehicles using the dunes so come prepared. There is a store there that sells them just in case you forget yours or yours happens to break, 3 times. Yes, 3 times. Also,I cannot say it enough, ride with someone! A mishap could leave you hurt and alone. Trust me on this one. The area is full of dangers and should something happen, you will want help ASAP. OK, so yes I was alone and yes I had an accident and yes I was damn lucky. I was able to ride out on my own. There are some areas with lava rock visible. Take each route slowly to make sure its a good area to ride. Don't be me.
