Marblehead, Utah

 Marblehead Mine

The Marblehead mining complex was announced to the world way back in 1956 as a supplier of dolomite to Utah County's Geneva Steel Works. Building began and product began shipping sometime in 1958. The company shipped "dead burned" dolomite to Geneva to be burned in the open hearth furnaces. Dolomite is used as a less expensive flux for the smelting of iron and steel. The complex was located west of Salt Lake City on the west side of the Lakeside Mountains. A railway spur was built out to the plant to ship the dolomite to the facility in Utah County. The line was controlled and built by the Western Pacific Railroad and remained in their control until a merger with the Union Pacific Railroad in 1983. The mine ran for many years until sometime in late 1986 or early 1987. The Geneva plant had briefly closed and when it reopened, the plant was using lime from another source. The plant changed owners and tried various projects including the burning of hazardous wastes which was shut down almost immediately. In 2008, the plant shipped out the last little bit of dolomite in trucks and mine was through. The plant sat for a while and demolition began in 2009. For a number of years, the plant was a magnet for photographers. The old equipment beneath the night sky made for some awesome fotos. I had read about the area and I procrastinated in going out to do some foto taking. I  paid the price. On the day we chose to visit, we were told in a very blunt way to get the hell off of the property. They were in the final stages of clean up and no one was allowed on the property. It really did not matter much at that point due to the fact everything was now gone. Except the fence. And the last of the clean up crew. Of course we took that as a challenge and made our way up to the actual mining area and shot some fotos. The crew was not happy and we literally escaped by going cross country. Helluva fun ride too. Below are some of the fotos I took as well as a few I borrowed off of Google. This is what happens. Things disappear and once they are gone, they are gone. I so wish I had gone out when I had first heard about it. Instead of cool old factory fotos I ended up with fotos of a mountain they had tried to demolish. Lesson learned.

The rail line still exists. Of late, the Union Pacific uses it to store unused freight cars. The day we went there were probably close to 300 rail cars sitting there doing nothing. On a short visit there a few months ago, the fences were down and you could drive all over the property. Nothing is left except the scars in the mountain and a few old roads. It was raining pretty good that day so I will have to return and spend some time taking all the old side roads up into the canyons and see what I can find.
