Close neighbors on the Million Dollar Highway south of Ouray, Ironton and Red Mountain Town were mining camps of the San Juan Mountains. Both towns are easily accessible by most vehicles unless its raining. The area is full of old mining sites as well as lots of old buildings. For those who choose not to venture off road, the county has made several turnouts so you can take fotos from there. But, that's really not as exciting as going into the area and seeing everything up close and personal. There is enough to see to keep you busy for hours. Ironton starts at the valley floor and then Red Mountain continues up to the top of the pass. Though a rarity, when exploring the Ouray area, one must remember that it can snow every month of the year. We have been in blizzards in July. So, go  prepared and enjoy a glimpse of the past.
